Quinn was just about to hang up when the phone was finally answered, a voice that said, ‘Yes?’

‘Mr Shane Martin?’

‘Who’s this?’

‘Is it?’

‘Who’s this?’

‘Detective Garda Paul Quinn, that’s who.’

‘What do you want?’

‘Are you Mr Shane Martin? Please answer the question.’

‘Yes, it’s me…’ A voice in the background spoke, a female voice. ‘Shane, what’s keeping you? And who’s that on the phone?’ ‘I’m sorry. I can’t really talk right now. What’s this about?’

‘A murder investigation, Mr Martin, the victim, a William Anderson…’

‘William,’ he said the name so softly that Quinn almost didn’t hear it.

‘Yes, or Tamara.’

‘Yes, or Tamara. I know. I heard…’ As the female voice sounded again, ‘Oh, excuse me, sorry, Shane, I didn’t realise you were still on the phone.’ Shane Martin spoke louder this time, and Quinn knew it was because someone was listening. ‘Oh, of course, yes, no problem. I don’t mind you ringing like this. We’ll catch up with that sometime today; it’ll give us plenty of time to prepare a presentation. Is that alright by you? Drop in anytime. I’m at the office all day.’

‘Yes, Mr Martin. That’s fine by me. Where exactly is your office?’

‘Oh, you’ve forgotten, have you? It’s 15A Burgh Quay. I’m sorry, but I really have to go now. I’ll see you then. And the presentation will work out great, don’t worry. Everything will be fine.’

‘OK, Mr Martin, I hope so. I’ll see you soon.’
